Çosan Kralı Secong tarafından 15.yüzyılda yaptırılmış olan Hangıl,14 ünsüz,10 ünlüden oluşur.Bir ünsüz ile bir ünlü hece oluşturur.Bu yolla,Hangıl ile binlerce sözcük kurulabilir ve hemen her ses gösterilebilir.Yalınlığı ve görece olarak az sayıda harfi dolayısıyla,Hangıl'ı öğrenmek kolaydır.Alfabenin bu kolaylığı sayesinde,Kore'de okuma yazma sorunu kalmamıştır.
